The jury in a murder trial has been presented with CCTV footage capturing the moment when a sergeant of the Metropolitan Police was shot inside a holding cell located in the southern parts of London. The shooter used an old-fashioned revolver to carry out the attack.
A man named Louis De Zoysa, who is 25 years old, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of killing Matiu Ratana, who was 54 at the time of the incident. The killing allegedly took place at Croydon Custody Centre in
According to prosecutors, Louis De Zoysa intentionally fired the gun four times.
According to Duncan Penny KC, Mr. De Zoysa hurt himself with the fourth shot.
According to the prosecution, Sergeant Ratana, who was also called Matthew and was responsible for custody duties at the time, died when Mr. De Zoysa was restrained with handcuffs in a holding cell.
According to Mr. Penny’s statement to the jury, the accused purchased an antique firearm from an auction in June 2020. It was a legally owned gun, and the accused had to make their own bullets as the ammunition for it was no longer produced.
According to the court proceedings, the officers who apprehended and inspected Mr. De Zoysa earlier that day did not discover that he had a loaded revolver in a holster.
During a hearing at Northampton Crown Court, Mr. Penny KC stated that according to the prosecution, Louis De Zoysa intentionally aimed his gun at Sgt Ratana and fired it twice.
He mentioned that there is visual evidence of the incident, including CCTV footage and other videos.
According to the prosecutor, the visual and auditory evidence indicates that Louis De Zoysa was responsible for the death of Matthew Ratana.
During the first day of the trial on Tuesday, it was revealed in court that the fourth shot fired had struck Mr. De Zoysa in the neck, resulting in brain damage.
The jurors were informed that the defendant will have the aid of a mediator during the trial, and will use a whiteboard due to challenges in communication.
During his court appearance on Wednesday, Mr. Penny KC informed everyone that he would be using brief sentences and uncomplicated vocabulary. He stated that he would do so to ensure that Louis De Zoysa, the defendant, could comprehend everything he said.
The lawyers representing the accusers began their argument by describing the series of incidents that preceded the shooting.
During the presentation to the jury, it was stated that Louis de Zoysa was walking on London Road in Norbury on September 25, 2020.
According to the prosecution, the police stopped him on the street, searched him, and then handcuffed him. Jurors were presented with body-worn camera footage from the officers.
The authorities discovered that Louis De Zoysa had cannabis and seven bullets with him, however, they did not come across a loaded revolver in a holster.
According to the court, the firearm and its carrying case were most likely hidden beneath one of the defendant’s armpits.
At the age of 23, Mr. De Zoysa was escorted to Croydon Police Station where he was placed in a holding room while still restrained with handcuffs.
During the trial, the jury was informed that Louis De Zoysa had concealed the firearm and was able to aim it at Sgt Ratana, who was on duty.
The individual purposefully fired a shot at Sergeant Ratana, aiming towards the chest from a very short distance. No prior warning was given before the incident occurred.
During the trial, it was revealed that the other officers who were present during the incident were unable to prevent Mr. De Zoysa from firing the shot. Unfortunately, the gunshot wound proved to be fatal as it caused significant damage to Sergeant Ratana’s left lung and heart. The prosecution has argued that the act was intentional and pre
According to court testimony, additional gunshots were fired during a confrontation with the other officers, one of which caused injury to Mr. De Zoysa.
According to the prosecution, it is claimed that a second shot was fired intentionally at Sgt Ratana, which struck him in the leg.
The cell was struck by the third shot.
According to the prosecution, it is believed that Mr. De Zoysa had access to the gun after his arrest, possibly while in the police van, before leaving.
A man named Mr. De Zoysa from Banstead in Surrey has denied the charge of murder and entered a plea of not guilty.
The legal proceedings are ongoing.
