During the upcoming summer, Heathrow airport security officers are set to go on strike, which may cause disruptions to travelers at the busiest airport in the UK.

Around 2,000 law enforcement officials belonging to the Unite union plan to go on strike for a period of 31 days starting from June 24th until August 27th.

The checking procedures for people who are not passengers at Terminals 3 and 5 will be impacted. This could potentially cause delays and long lines at the security checkpoints.

According to Unite, the pay dispute with the airport has reached a significant level of escalation.

The statement mentioned that employees had declined a salary proposal of 10.1% that did not match the current inflation rate. The document also highlighted that the latest RPI rate was at 11.4%, indicating a higher cost of living.

Despite previous strikes, Heathrow’s contingency plans have minimized the impact on passengers. However, the upcoming strikes will affect Terminal 3 workers, which is a new development.

Heathrow airport is known to be one of the most crowded airports globally, and it could have an impact on individuals across the UK.

According to the BBC’s transport correspondent Katy Austin, the strikes may cause delays in security lines, but it is not yet known if any airlines will decide to cancel their flights.

The strikes are taking place during popular travel periods such as the Eid festival on June 28th, 29th, and 30th, the start of school holidays on July 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, and the August bank holiday on August 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th.

According to a representative from Heathrow, the airport is committed to taking all necessary measures to reduce the impact of the strikes as much as possible.

Unite, a labor union, has previously attempted to disrupt the operations of the airport by initiating strikes on some of its most hectic days. However, the airport management has been working to develop strategies to ensure smooth travel experiences for passengers in the event of any future disruptions.

Most colleagues do not back the strikes organized by Unite. A pay rise that is above inflation and lasts for two years is available for colleagues, but Unite needs to allow them to participate in the decision-making process.

They stated that discussions aimed at resolving the conflict with Unite would carry on.

Heathrow airport has been hit by strikes at a time when it is already facing challenges in recovering from the effects of the pandemic. The company that operates the airport has reported a loss of £139 million in the first quarter of this year.

According to Sharon Graham from Unite, the airport has misplaced its priorities. She believes that the company is immensely rich and will be making huge profits this summer, along with providing high executive pay.

The PCS union members working at Heathrow Border Force went on multiple strikes this year, which led to the government employing military personnel to work at the entry gates.

Since last summer, numerous industries in the UK have witnessed strikes as hundreds of thousands of workers have been participating in them.

The majority of people are requesting better working conditions and higher wages that keep up with the increasing cost of living, which is currently growing at a rate that has not been seen in almost four decades.

During the summer, airports experienced disorder due to a combination of strikes, lack of personnel and a sudden increase in travel demand after the pandemic.

Wayne King, who is the regional co-ordinating officer of Unite, stated on Wednesday that customers should anticipate a continuation of the current situation.

There will be unavoidable delays, disturbances, and cancellations due to the strike. The responsibility for this conflict entirely falls on Heathrow Airport.

According to Which?, a consumer group, passengers have the right to receive compensation from airlines if their flights are cancelled due to staff strikes. However, this entitlement does not apply if the airline provides a notice of two weeks prior to the cancellation.

In the event of a flight being cancelled due to strikes by airport personnel, Border Force or air traffic control, it will be considered an exceptional circumstance.

As per the guidelines laid down by Which?, passengers who are supposed to travel are entitled to receive a refund or another flight option in case of any inconvenience caused, but they cannot claim compensation for the
