Pope Francis to Undergo Abdominal Surgery at 86: Vatican Confirms Details and Recovery Plan

The 86-year-old Pope Francis is scheduled to undergo surgery on his abdomen at Gemelli hospital in Rome in the afternoon of Wednesday.

According to the Vatican, the individual is anticipated to remain in the hospital for a few days to recuperate from the hernia surgery.

According to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, the hernia is causing symptoms that are recurring, painful, and getting worse.

The individual who is 86 years of age has encountered a variety of health concerns in the past few years. As a result of a persistent knee condition, they require a cane and a wheelchair to assist them in their mobility.

The Vatican released a statement announcing that the Pope’s medical team had determined that surgery was necessary after evaluating his condition in the past few days.

Mr Bruni stated that the individual will have a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery during the early afternoon, while they are under general anaesthesia.

He stated that the patient will be required to stay at the medical center for a number of days in order to ensure a smooth recovery process and full restoration of function.

On Wednesday, Pope Francis conducted his usual weekly audience without mentioning his upcoming surgery.

The Vatican’s press office has announced that all upcoming events featuring a particular individual have been cancelled until June 18th as a safety measure.

On Tuesday, the Pope visited a hospital in Rome for a planned medical examination. This was several months after he had been admitted to the same hospital because of bronchitis.

In March, he had to be hospitalized for three days due to a lung infection. This happened to coincide with the 10th anniversary of his tenure as pontiff.

During the year 2021, Pope Francis had to undergo surgery to remove a portion of his colon due to a painful bowel condition. This led to him spending ten days in the hospital. Recently, he disclosed that the same problem had returned.

In the previous month, he cancelled his Friday meetings because he was suffering from a high body temperature.

Although Pope Benedict XVI resigned from his position in 2013, the current Pope has stated that he has no intention of doing the same.

Last year, it is reported that he told one of his assistants that leading the Church requires the use of one’s intelligence rather than just physical force.

Throughout his ten-year tenure as the leader of the Catholic Church, the Pope was believed to have maintained good overall health.
