England has the option to choose four primary seam bowlers, along with the off-spin of Joe Root and additional overs from Stokes if he can bowl. This possibility remains unchanged.
This is especially relevant when you take into account Stokes‘ tendency to choose fielding first, as he has done in all four instances when he won the toss at home since becoming the captain last year. On the other hand, Australia usually prefers to bat first, having done so 17 out of the last 20 times they won the toss. This means that England does not necessarily need a spinner to perform well in the fourth innings of a match.
The theory that Leach is not a valuable player for England has been proven wrong by his significant contribution to the team’s success of winning 11 out of 13 Tests. He has played in every match and has bowled more than 1,000 deliveries, which is more than any other player on the team.
Since 2001, England has not won an Ashes Test match without having a primary spinner in their playing squad.
If a team requires the expertise of a specialized spin bowler, Moeen Ali is a strong candidate for the role with his extensive experience of 64 Test matches and 195 wickets. He is only surpassed by Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann in terms of number of wickets taken by a spinner for England. With five Test hundreds to his name, this player’s abilities in both batting and bowling provide England with the option of including an additional seam bowler in case Stokes is unable to bowl.
Moeen would provide stability to the lower order if he bats at the eighth position, as Stuart Broad is often placed too high in the batting order.
The combination of Root, Harry Brook, Stokes, and Jonny Bairstow in the engine room, followed by Moeen, is very exciting. England’s style, which focuses on attacking and free-flowing play led by Stokes, is perfectly suited for Moeen’s batting and bowling skills. In the past, Moeen may not have performed as well under stricter regimes.
Moeen has considered making a comeback in the past. In the previous summer, he changed his mind about retiring, but he declined an offer to join the Pakistan tour. Moeen Ali, an English cricketer, has performed poorly against the Australian cricket team, with an average of 64.65 and a strike-rate of 100.5. This is worse compared to his performance against other teams. Australian batsman Steve Smith, in particular, has been a tough opponent for Moeen, as Smith has an average of nearly 114 against him. Additionally, Moeen’s performance in 2021, which is the last year of his Test career, has been subpar, with an average of 37.50
Towards the end of his Test career, the left-handed player’s ability to bat also decreased. In a span of 16 Tests from the beginning of 2018, Moeen’s average was only 16, which is less than half of what he had accomplished in 48 matches before that period.
Stokes and McCullum are not anticipating any negative outcomes with Moeen’s addition to the team for England. They are optimistic and even confident that Moeen will have a positive influence on their performance. This approach has been successful for them up to this point.
